Corna meme- Duke authorities continue to closely monitor the emergence of a novel corona virus that occurred in Wuhan, China last month and has begun to spread to other countries, including the United States.
The disease is linked to a large seafood and animal market in Wuhan, suggesting the virus may have originally been transmitted from animals to humans. Symptoms of the virus include fever and lower respiratory diseases (eg cough, shortness of breath) similar to a common cold.
The disease can be more severe in rare circumstances, especially for patients with weakened immune systems, the elderly or those with underlying respiratory problems. More serious symptoms include bronchitis or pneumonia.
Register your safety trip
All students are required to register trips outside the United States to Duke, and faculty and staff are encouraged to register so Duke can provide timely assistance if an emergency occurs abroad.
The Duke’s Travels Register
Some airports are introducing new screening measures for travelers coming from China as a precaution. However, the Duke is currently not restricting travel to or from China or other international areas based on the disease. Read More Information For Corona Virus

Duke regularly has faculty, staff and students traveling to China, including Duke Kunshan University, a partnership between Duke University and Wuhan University. The university also welcomes visits by students and scholars from China to conferences and regular exchanges.
“We are in regular communication with our DUK colleagues, our infectious disease experts at Duke Health and with local, state and national agencies,” said Kyle Cavanaugh, vice president of administration. “We will continue to monitor this problem as it evolves to determine the potential impact and actions we may need to take.”
The Centers for Disease Control suggests the following precautions for anyone traveling to an area
area where the disease is widespread:
Avoid contact with sick people.
Avoid animals (live or dead), animal markets, and animal-derived products (such as raw meat).
Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use alcohol-based disinfectants if soap and water are not available.
Anyone who has recently returned from China and is suffering from fever, cough or difficulty breathing should seek medical attention immediately and call the doctor’s office to inform them of recent trips and symptoms. Also, campus visitors from China who report these symptoms should seek medical attention and immediately alert their hosts to the Duke.
